Christmas Traditions

When Dan and I got married,  because of the closeness of both of our families - we were able to do a lot of fun Holiday things with both families and continue doing the traditions we had grown up with. Last year we went back to Utah for Christmas and got to continue doing all of that. This year with sweet baby Addison coming in January we are staying in Lubbock, so Dan and I decided that since we are officially having our OWN Christmas and Jaxon is getting older and can understand more - we should start some of our own traditions. The problem is... WHAT?

Some of the traditions we grew up with that we are planning on keeping are:
*Going to Breakfast on Christmas Eve Morning at Cracker Barrel (Dan's family)
*Opening a present on Christmas Eve (always matching/coordinating PJ's to wear) (Lisa's Family)
*Reading a Christmas story as a family before going to bed on Christmas eve (Both Families)
*Having a HUGE yummy breakfast Christmas Day (Both Families)

That's it - how sad! So you can see why we need more! Normally we did a lot of other things but they were things in Utah so since we are not there we need to figure out things we can do here in Lubbock as well as just things at home that can be done anywhere.

Some things we have talked about are:
1) Going to see Santa (now that we have a child - (almost children) this is obviously something that will be fun)
2) Doing something with the 12 days of Christmas - ANY IDEAS ABOUT THIS?

What are some traditions you do with your family?

  1. We have a mini Christmas tree for the kids about 10 inches is all. And for boys the elves visit and leave money in it to help them buy mom or dad a little gift. If it's girls then the pixies leave a little money. My parents, grandparents did this and it works pretty good until the kids hit 7 or 8. But it's fun for them to wake up in the morning leading up to Christmas and be surprised with a quarter or dollar. Then you or Dan can take Jaxon to the dollar store and let him pick out something for mom and dad all on his own.

  2. The only Christmas tradition that we had growing up was that we'd watch "It's a Wonderful Life" on Christmas eve, and while we watched it, we'd eat a dinner of crackers, cheese, summer sausage, and sparkling cider while sitting on a blanket in the living room (picnic style). I really looked forward to it as a kid, especially because it made Christmas Eve go by faster so we could get to Christmas morning! Lol
I'm sure you and Dan will come up something cute and fun that you can make your own. :)

  3. We have a tradition that I grew up with and we continued with our kids. Every year we take the kids to the Hallmark store or a mall kiosk and let them pick out a new ornament for the tree. It's fun to look back on the years and see what they were interested in. Then when the kids leave home, they have a bunch of ornaments for their tree. My kids love this and they love looking at my ornaments from when I was a little girl!

  4. Google "Elf on a Shelf". It's a tradition we've started this year...kids LOVE it and it's so much fun!! We'll do it every year, absolutely. Sounds like you have some good ones already started!
